design, craft, & art direction

Informed by experience with wood, education, and art direction, Alexis Rosa Caldero’s craft strives to evoke beauty, unearth story, and build connection.

As independent Art Director to Mira Nakashima, Creative Director of George Nakashima Woodworkers, Alexis leads the collaborative reimagining of the studio’s product-oriented catalog into a “Process Book” alongside the talented, independent Creative Director, Asad Pervaiz. Alexis also directed the studio’s website — receiving the 2019 People’s Voice Webby Award in 2019 for Architecture and Design — with the renowned design firm, For Office Use Only.

Alexis was entrusted this work after she designed furniture for Nakashima Woodworkers for nearly four years. As Mira’s then-sole designer, she spent her days sitting with, selecting, and understanding the studio’s wood; she translated the needs of every slab with chalk and pencil, advocating for the client while bringing out the beauty, proportions, and texture of an unparalleled collection of lumber.

Alexis’ prior work with TechShop, GE Garages, and MAKESHOP included building out makerspaces; nurturing makers of all ages and trades; and teaching skills, from advanced manufacturing techniques to basic woodworking.
